Famous Cities of the World: Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh Cambodia is in the southern region of the country and is a hotspot with travelers heading over to visit the biggest of all Cambodian attractions, Angkor Wat. In fact, if it wasn't for the presence of the sprawling network of temples, Phnom Penh tourism wouldn't thrive as it has for so many years now. Phnom Penh also has its own dialect. The city is associated as the most modern of Cambodian cities. Phnom Penh was founded in the 14th century and served as the royal capital for nearly a century, beginning in 1434. It was again made the royal capital in the mid-19th century.

Phnom Penh gets its name from Wat Phnom – an important religious site in the heart of the city. It gained importance when in 1373 Daun Penh (Grandma Penh), a wealthy widow living on the banks of Tonle Sap River, found five Buddha statues in the hole of a tree trunk floating in the water. Phnom Penh will undergo a dramatic increase in its population as approximately 3-4 million Cambodians are expected to travel to Phnom Penh to take part in the festivities. This year’s parade, celebrating Cambodia’s 55th year of independence, is expected to be much larger than in previous years. Phnom Penh is at a close proximity to the Embassies, banks, Ministries and the commercial districts. The decor of the hotel is beautifully done and there are marble pillars, spiral staircases and chandeliers.

Phnom Penh: the name can’t help but conjure up an image of the exotic. The glimmering spires of the royal palace, the fluttering saffron of the monks? Phnom Penh the capital of Cambodia oozes French colonial charm and remnants are evident in the architecture and cuisine. The city though is entrenched with rich Khmer history and Buddhism and this is put on show each year when two festivals are co joined, the Water Festival and full moon of the Buddhist calendar month of Kadeuk. Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, was a bustling commercial hub during French colonial days and today has re-established itself as the political and financial center of the country. Its rich historical past can be traced to the Khmer and French influence evident in the ornate Khmer-style temples and the grand colonial buildings and villas.
